DESPITE a slight overcast hanging over Two Lovers’ Point, athletes in the IIAAG High School Cross Country League were ready to get their race on.
Scheduled to square off against one another, the John F. Kennedy Islanders and St. John’s Knights were looking to notch a victory. When the meet came to a close and all runners were accounted for, it was the green and gold of the Islanders that claimed victory in both the boys’ and girls’ division.
The Knights looked strong early in the race as avid runner Brandon Fell cruised by his fellow competitors for a first-place finish. Fell recorded a race time of 15:03. St. John’s continued to impress early on as Jonathon O’Dell crossed the finish line as the third overall male runner. However, the Islanders were not ready to let anything get out of hand. Backed by the strong finishes of John Aquino, Thomas Borgonia, and Brian Crow, JFK managed to steal much needed points to claim the team victory. Aquino finished the race second overall with a clocked-in time of 15:29.
In the girls’ meet, it was a near duplicate for both teams. St. John’s witnessed two of their top runners cross the finish line in the one-two position. Taylor Fell and Allie Lai completed their respective races in 17:44 and 19:59. However, just like their male counterparts, the Lady Islanders completed the race in great team fashion to claim the victory.
