DAY 13 of the 2012 London Olympics proved to be unlucky for Guam’s Olympian Amy Atkinson, who competed in heat three of yesterday’s 800m women’s race.

Qualifying for the London Games with a personal best time of 2:21.30, Atkinson failed to qualify for the semifinals. However, Atkinson posted a national best record for Guam with a time of 2:18.53, shaving 2.77 seconds off her previous best time.

The Variety was not sure as of press time why three of the event’s favorites, supposed to race against Atkinson in heat three, did not start the race, but Ukraine’s Liliya Obanova, Ethiopia’s Fantu Magiso and Jamaica’s Kenia Sinclair did not take part in this heat for which they were scheduled.

Qualifying for the semifinals from heat three were Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba (2:07.57), Canada’s Jessica Smith (2:07.75) and Bahrain’s Genzeb Shumi (2:07.77).

Late last night, Guam’s Maria McQueen Dunn (wrestling) was scheduled to begin the 63kg first-round freestyle qualifications.
