WITH the all-star weekend fast approaching, teams in the Guam Amateur Baseball Latte Spring League are putting forth their best before going on a break.
On Tuesday night, the Talofofo Rangers took on the undefeated Chalan Pago Amigos at Okkodo Field. The Rangers were looking to deal the Amigos their first loss of the season. However, Chalan Pago used some late game scoring to come back and steal a 5-3 victory over the Rangers. With the win, the Amigos improve their season record to 8-0.
Talofofo started the game out as the aggressors by getting on the board in the second inning. With Amos Taijeron and Perry Mojica at the hot corners, the Rangers were able to take a 1-0 lead after the duo executed a double-steal. Talofofo continued to provide assistance to themselves in the third inning as they upped their lead to 3-0. After a Shaun Santos-hit single got things started in the inning, the Rangers drove in their second run of the game on an R.J. Cruz RBI-single. Before the Amigos could end the inning, Cruz came home courtesy of a Shawn Dela Cruz RBI-single.
Chalan Pago finally ended their scoreless drought in the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 3-1. After Broad Santos took base on a single, it wasn’t too long after when teammate Razor Quintanilla hit a long fly ball for the sacrifice fly. The Amigos seemed to have just gotten things started as they returned in the fifth inning and produced huge.
Talofofo found themselves in a huge bind as the Amigos were able to load the bases early in the inning. With Broad Santos at the plate, Talofofo pitcher Jassen Guerrero walked his opponent to drive in a run and make it a 3-2 game. On the ensuing at-bat, Quintanilla pounded a hard hit that was too tough for the Rangers to handle to drive in the tying run. Just before the Rangers could get out of the inning, Chalan Pago’s Zach Quintanilla capped off the rally with a two-RBI single to give his team a 5-3 lead.
In the final two innings of the game, Chalan Pago relief-pitcher Paul Campos was able to retire the Rangers in order in the sixth and ended any chances of a comeback in the seventh inning. Chalan Pago’s Bruce San Nicolas was awarded the victory from the mound and improved his record to 4-0. The Rangers’ Guerrero was dealt the loss.
Guam Amateur Baseball Latte Spring League resumes action later today with the Northern A’s taking on the Yona Eagles. All teams will take a break this weekend for their All-Star festivities to include a homerun derby scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by the All-Star game at 4 p.m.
