NOT too long ago, the Circle K Island Stunnerz and 76 Steel Blazers took on one another for the inaugural Bud Light Guam Women’s Tackle Football League championship.

Both teams provided everyone in attendance an action-packed matchup which did not disappoint fans.

On Saturday afternoon, the two teams met once again – only this time it was the season opener for the eight-woman tournament format. At the end of four intense quarters, the Stunnerz picked up where they left off and reigned victorious after a 32-22 beating over the Blazers at Eagles Field in Mangilao.

Both teams came out in the first quarter looking for the first opportunity to strike. However, both defenses played extremely well as each held the other scoreless. It wasn’t until the second quarter, however, when the game’s first points were posted on the board. Circle K’s Lorina Guerrero tacked on six points after cruising into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown. A failed kick attempt kept the game 6-0.

With minutes remaining in the first half, the Steel Blazers were looking to end the drought. Not too long before the halftime signal was blown, Mae Ann Pajaro found the light for the Blazers as she converted a 15-yard touchdown run for her team’s first score of the game. On the ensuing play, TJ Rodrigues split the uprights to give the Blazers an 8-6 lead heading into the halftime break.

During the intermission, Guerrero found a way to pump up the team as she returned in the second half to lead her team. Using her strength and speed, the energized Guerrero tallied four of her five touchdowns in the second half to include a game-capping 58-yard touchdown run that put Circle K up 32-14.

But the Steel Blazers refused to let down in the game and continued to fight throughout. Wide receiver Deana “Showtime” Garcia took the ball 25 yards into the end zone on a nice lateral pass from Rodrigues for the score.

Later in the half, Pajaro was able to pound her way through the Stunnerz defense for her second score. However, that would be all the Blazers could muster as the final signal to end the game was blown, giving the Stunnerz reasons to celebrate their season-opener victory.

The Stunnerz open the season with a 1-0 record, while the Steel Blazers who went undefeated in the previous season start out with a 0-1 record. Bud Light Guam Women’s Tackle Football League resumes action next Saturday with two games on the schedule.
