This past Friday and Saturday, swimmers of all ages made their way down to the Hagatna pool to compete in the Guam Swimming Championships hosted by the Guam Swimming Federation.

The two-day tournament saw many of Guam’s finest swimmers along with teams from CNMI and two swimmers from FSM put on their best showing and laid everything out in the pool.

At the conclusion of the two-day event, two new records were set and athletes were presented awards during a ceremony.

According to Guam Swimming Federation secretary Maria Cruz, the Guam Championships is the final swim meet of the season.  Competitors in the meet needed to have qualifying times in order to enter.

In one of the most exciting races of the day, four of Guam’s top swimmers took it to one another in the Men’s 200m Freestyle.  All four competitors in the race represented the Tsunami Swim Club.  However, at the end, only one swimmer could raise his hand victorious.  After cruising to a first-place finish, Ken Barcinas set a new record in the race after touching the wall in 1:56.32.  Barcinas was able to surpass the old record of 1:56.66 set by Chris Duenas back in December 2009.

Following right behind Barcinas were fellow teammates Tasi Limtiaco, Joshua Alba, and Yuya Kitadate.  Limtiaco posted a time of 2:04.14.  The real race was for third place as Alba edged out Kitadate by less than one second.  The two finished in 2:12.92 and 2:13.65 respectively.

Later in the meet, Kai Aricayos was the lone competitor in the Boys (11-12) 200m Butterfly race.  Despite having no one in the pool in his race, Aricayos was able to finish the swim in record fashion, clocking in a time of 3:08.72.  Aricayos himself set the previous record on May 2011.
