WITH the recent tropical disturbance in the area, outdoor sports around the island for the last couple of days were either postponed, rescheduled or cut short.
However, with weather conditions starting to look a little more promising, fans can anticipate a lot more action outdoors combined with some indoors this Memorial Day weekend. Here’s a look at what’s taking place around the island:
The Interscholastic Middle School Girls Basketball League and Guam Swimming Federation will get things started with this weekend’s events. Middle School basketball action has four games on their Friday afternoon schedule. Games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with B-team games and immediately following afterwards will be A-team action. Over at the Hagåtña Swimming Pool, the Guam Swimming Federation will be hosting the Guam Swimming Championships/Award Ceremony. According to a press release, the two-day event will begin later this afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. and then resume action tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Chuukese Amateur Basketball
The recently renovated and repaired Agana Heights Gymnasium will be busy on Saturday and Sunday as several teams in the Chuukese Amateur Basketball League will hit the court. With three games scheduled on each day, fans can expect some fun and excitement as the Chuukese community always provides tremendous support.
Saturday, May 26:
6 p.m.: Remataw vs. Repii;
7 p.m.: Efirak vs. KAG;
8 p.m.: Sanuma vs. Tinkun
Sunday, May 27:
6 p.m.: Ekene vs. Pairerh;
7 p.m.: Dream Team vs. Kuop;
8 p.m.: Dragon vs. JPC
Pacific Asia Youth Invitational
A handful of local youth soccer teams will gain some international experience as they compete against visiting U12 and U14 Claret teams from the Philippines in the 2012 Pacific Asia Youth Invitational beginning May 26 at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon.
Action on the pitch will begin with both the U12 and U14 starting things out at 10 a.m. Games will be played throughout the day with the last scheduled game to take place at 5 p.m.
Teams will then return to action on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, there will be three games scheduled to take place simultaneously at 1 p.m. and a final game of the day to be played at 2:30 p.m. On Memorial Day, fans will be able to witness games at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
2012 Nissan Guam Amateur Golf Classic
Louie Sunga and Nalathai Vongjalorn will defend their Men’s and Ladies’ golf titles this weekend. The two golfers will compete against some of the island’s best golfers in the 2012 Nissan Guam Amateur Golf Championship, which will be played at Guam International Country Club throughout the weekend. This is Guam’s “Premier Golf Event” and is played over 54 holes of individual medal play.
