THIS past weekend, about 10 junior players made their way to the Sheraton Laguna Resort & Spa tennis courts to participate in the ASC Family Classic 2012.
With a bright and athletic future ahead of them, the 8-under participants went through four rounds of tennis action. Event organizers, together with the Tennis Academy of Guam, modified the playing area by creating five smaller courts to accommodate the athletes. With the assistance of an assigned junior coach, the youthful tennis players played a two out of three set match.
In the first round of play, Jacob Jackson and Nicole Charfauros got things started. Both athletes brought their “A-game” as they battled through two tough sets. The opening set went the distance and Jackson was able to pick up the 9-7 win. In the second set, Charfauros hung in the match for the most part. However, Jackson completed the straight set victory after picking up the 7-5 win.
The second game of the first round pitted another Jackson (Johnny) taking on Alexandria Manalo. After two sets of action, Johnny Jackson followed suit to his brother’s earlier play and garnered a first round victory. Manalo suffered a straight-set (7-3, 7-4) loss. In the third match of the opening round, Kaia Malakooti made quick work over Kangsan Yoon and walked away with a 7-1, 7-3 win.
Match four and five of the first round pitted SuHyang Chool taking on Kalub Cruz and Dakota Gibson going up against Lila Moylan-Bennett. Choo emerged victorious in the opening round after defeating Cruz 7-3, 7-2. The Gibson/Moylan-Bennett match was a battle-tested opening match as the match went to a tie-breaking set. However, at the end it was Gibson who squeaked by Moylan-Bennett with a 7-3, 8-10, 7-4 win.
