Saint Paul clinches Spoon Division

LAST Saturday, many of the island's private schools gathered at the Wettengel Field for playoffs action in the 2012 WATTS IIAAG/GRFU Middle School Boys Rugby League.

Teams battled one another for the right to advance into the different division finals. In the Spoon bracket, the Saint Paul Warriors defeated the top-seeded Bishop Obispos 6 (40-26).

"St. Paul has not taken any rugby title for the past two years, even if it is just the Spoon Bracket trophy, I am still very proud of each and every player," said Warriors coach Nino Garcia. "I know that it isn't a first-place trophy, but taking home the title changed the very expression of each and every player on this team."

With only three teams in the Spoon bracket, Bishop finished as the top-seeded team and waited to see whom they will take on later in the day.

In the semifinals match, the Warriors and the 3rd-seeded Santa Barbara Spartans squared off against one another for the right to take on the Obispos. At the end of the match, Saint Paul edged out the Spartans 28-22 to advance to the bracket finals.

Despite going into the playoffs two players short due to injury, the Warriors were determined to make the best of the situation. After a hard-fought battle against the Obispos, Saint Paul was able to overcome the challenge and take out the top seed.

"I can guarantee each and every player on this team was overwhelmed and overjoyed to win something," Garcia said.
