ACTION around the diamond is as active as it could get around the island on weekends. This past Saturday, the Guam Masters Baseball League returned to the Paseo Stadium for a full day’s worth of excitement for family and friends. With several games on the schedule, it was almost impossible to not catch any action. Here’s a look at what took place:
In one of two scheduled evening games, the Tamuning Twins took advantage of the first three innings to defeat the Yona Masters 10-8 in a very close match. The Twins scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, two in the bottom of the second, and seven in the bottom of the third against Yona starter Frank Pangelinan.
The Masters rallied back with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning, and one in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Yona had plated three runs and was rallying back with the bases loaded and two outs, until Tamuning reliever Ken Santos got John Farnum to fly out to center to end the game.
John Halloran got the win while Pangelinan took the loss. Yona’s Joe Sablan was 3-for-4, a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Tamuning’s Vince Bamba was 3-for-3, two RBI, and three runs scored. Yona now drops to 3-8, with Tamuning improving to 6-4-1/2.
Asan Rai vs. Docomo Mangachongs
In the final game of the day, the Docomo Mangachongs took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning against the Asan Rai – only to see that lead slip away. The Rai touched up Docomo starter Joe Rivera in the bottom of the fourth for three runs and reliever William Nault for four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Asan reliever Francis Taijeron gave up just one run in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to seal the win as time expired. Bruce Fejeran got the win with Nault suffering the loss. Docomo’s Johnny Arriola was 2-for-4, and a run scored. Asan’s Gerard Cabana was 2-for-3, a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Docomo drops to 1-10 with Asan moving to 9-2-1/2.
In other games, the MTM Falcons improve to 4-5-1/2 as they edged out C.T.D. Adahi, 3-2. Adahi is now even at 6-6. Chevy Silverado keeps on trucking and stays atop the league at 11-0-1/2 with the 14-7 win over the Yigo Hunters. Yigo is 3-6-1 for the season. The Pohnpei Masters get the 11-1 win over the Yona Red Hawks and move to 2-9. The Red Hawks are now 1-10.
