Blazers championship berth
FINISHING their regular season unbeaten is not something the 76 Steel Blazers are going to settle for in the Bud Light Guam Women’s Tackle Football League.
After Saturday’s beating over the SPPC Lady Spartans, it was quite apparent the Steel Blazers were hungry for the league’s inaugural season title. While playing dominating defense, combined with high intensity on offense, the Steel Blazers earned their berth into the title match after cruising to a 58-18 victory over the Lady Spartans.
The Steel Blazers wasted no time setting the tone on defense as they forced the Lady Spartans to a quick four and out on their first drive. Offensively, the Steel Blazers needed only one snap to put the game’s first points on the board. Using a misdirection play, Pauline Nededog found her way to the end zone for a quick six points. On the ensuing play, Deana Garcia split the uprights to up her team’s lead to 8-0.
Midway through the first quarter, the Lady Spartans showed some sign of light as they responded with a TD of their own and cut their deficit to 8-6. After converting back-to-back first downs, Natasha Flores was able to power her way through the Steel Blazers defense for the touchdown. On the restart of play, 76’s Deana “Showtime” Garcia ran the ball back for a 55-yard kickoff return for a TD.
The Steel Blazers continued to tear the game open in the second quarter as they tacked on two more touchdowns with successful conversions to eventually build a 28-6 lead. With minutes left in the half, the Lady Spartans trimmed six points off the Steel Blazers lead after Rita Flores pummeled her way down the left side of the field for an SPPC touchdown.
Second half
Returning from the halftime break, the Lady Spartans showed signs of a comeback as they immediately scored a touchdown. Less than two minutes into the half, Alonika Reyes took the pigskin 52 yards downfield for the score, making it a 28-18 match.
However, the Steel Blazers buckled down defensively and shut down the Lady Spartans for the remainder of the game to hold them scoreless. Meanwhile, the Steel Blazers continued to pour points out on the board and eventually put the game way out of reach. The Blazers added 30 more points before the game’s final whistle was blown.
Garcia led the way offensively for the Steel Blazers as she tallied a combined total of 170 yards offensively. Reyes led the Lady Spartans with 72 rushing yards.
