BUDWEISER Baseball League semi-final playoff series action resumed last night at the Paseo Stadium with the Bank of Guam Athletics taking on the Atkins Kroll Islanders.

Both teams came into the game looking to clinch a victory and take a one-game lead in their best-of-five series. After seven complete innings of play, the Athletics held on to a three-run lead (4-1) over the Islanders.

Bank of Guam got things started immediately in the top of the first inning and took a quick 3-0 lead. With a runner on base, Alejandro Diaz crushed a long ball for a two-run homer. Before the Islanders could end the inning, an RBI-single by RJ Joe increased the Athletics lead to three runs.

After retiring the Bank of Guam side in the top half of the third, AK was able to trim a run off their deficit to make it a 3-1 game. The Islanders were able to put two runners on base after a walk and base hit by Pat Alvarez and Miller Santos, respectively, to start the inning. Moments later, John "JQ" Quintanilla hit an RBI single to score Alvarez and make it a two-run game.

Both teams played excellent defense as neither was able to tag on a base hit in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Later in the top of the sixth inning, the Athletics upped their lead to 4-1 after an RBI double by Ryan Martinez scored teammate Paul Toves Jr.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Islanders threatened to shave runs off their deficit. However, the Athletics held ground defensively and ended the side without harm.

Budweiser Baseball League playoff action resumes tonight as the 76 Cardinals hope to even up their series against the defending champion Moylan's-O.D.C. Braves in game two. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
