Keep undefeated record intact
GRIDIRON action on Guam continues to be the hot sport on Saturdays as ladies in the Bud Light Guam Women’s Tackle Football League bring their A-game to the Eagles Field in Mangilao.
This past weekend, two games were on the schedule and neither game was a disappointment for fans in attendance. In the first of two games, the 76 Steel Blazers took on Team Legacy and after a seesaw battle, the Blazers defeated their opponents, 30-20. With the victory, the Blazers improved their unblemished record (3-0), while Team Legacy dropped (1-2).
In the early moments of the opening quarter, neither team was able to get a total edge above the other. Holding on to a one-point lead, Blazers starting quarterback T.J. Rodriguez was able to dial up teammate Deana Garcia’s number for a 20-plus yard connection. Despite not being able to convert their PAT, Garcia’s touchdown put the Blazers up 14-7.
Not too long after allowing their opponents to score, Team Legacy responded back with a score of their own to drop their deficit back down to one.
Shawnel Castro was able to bust through the Blazer defense for a 10-yard TD run. The seesaw battle would continue as 76 answered with yet another score of their own when Chandra Roberts found the end zone on a 40-yard run. Garcia was able to split the uprights on the PAT for two more, making it a 22-13 game.
With time on the clock burning away in the first half, Team Legacy went right back to work and did so with every intention of scoring. A little trickery allowed Legacy’s Castro to score on a 20-yard reverse run to make things a little interesting at 22-20. Both teams would head into the halftime break knowing it could be anyone’s game.
The Steel Blazers returned from their halftime break with the intention of controlling the field and not allowing Team Legacy to convert any points.
Despite some opportunities by Team Legacy to score, 76 denied and stopped any chances while being able to add eight more points of their own. The final whistle to signal the end of the game was blown and the scoreboard reflected the 10-point margin of victory for the Steel Blazers.
Island Stunnerz take down Lady Spartans
Led by the offensive power and scoring of Lorina Guerrero, the Island Stunnerz cruised to a 39-6 victory over the Lady Spartans. Guerrero scored four rushing touchdowns in the outburst.
