WITH the 2012 IIAAG High School Boys Volleyball season approaching its final stretch in regular season play, teams are giving everything they’ve got in hopes of capturing a good seed for the playoffs.
On Wednesday night, the St. John’s Knights played host at their Tumon campus and were set to face off against the hot-streaking Father Duenas Friars.
The Friars needed only two-sets (25-18, 25-21) to take care of their visitors and improve their league-record to 5-2. St. John’s falls to 2-5 on the season with the loss.
Early in the first set, St. John’s built a quick lead courtesy of Friars errors. However, a determined and focused Father Duenas bunch regrouped and tied the game before taking a lead. It was from that point on that the Friars never looked back and was able to close out the opening set.
Heading into the second set, the Knights looked to equalize the game and hoped to force a third and deciding set.
Led by the offense of Reed Meyer, the Knights were able to obtain a lead from the start and didn’t look back for a while. Holding a 21-17 lead, St. John’s looked poised to dominate later in the set. However, the visitors from Mangilao had other intentions.
Led by big defensive stops by Michael Sakazaki and Tristin Debold, Father Duenas was able to equalize the game at 21-21. The Friars were able to finally build a two-point (23-21) lead after Meyer was roofed by Debold. With match-point at hand, the Friars capitalized on a Knights’ overpass and Sakazaki returned the ball to sender with a huge game-ending hit.
