THIS time of year, students have summer vacation on their minds. Next week will begin the graduation season – the completion of one life chapter into another. Graduation is such an exciting time for everyone. Students see the endless possibilities in front of them. It’s surely a time to start thinking for the future.
Graduation is an important rite of passage. Thousands of young Guamanians will be receiving a diploma displaying for the world the hard work they put into their studies. It is a big achievement, and you should be very proud of yourselves. We are all very proud of you.
Although you turn the page on this chapter of your life into a new one, remember this is the beginning of the rest of your life. It is a significant time because there is so much hope, so much potential. Some of you will go to college, or join the workforce. Others will serve in our nation’s armed forces. The important thing is you begin to think about what you want to do with your life.
Though there are various options right now, I strongly encourage you to pursue higher education. College is an investment in your future – in the future of the community in which you live. By getting an education, you have every opportunity to dictate your success and the growth of your community.
Education does not have to be costly, and you do not have to go far to get it. There are outstanding education institutions right in Mangilao – the University of Guam and the Guam Community College.
These schools are preparing Guamanians for the future. They have numerous programs to help prepare you for the career you choose. You can become a teacher, a nurse, a culinary artist, or a businessman right here at home.
UOG and GCC have excellent faculty and staff to help you receive a diploma. There are scholarships you can obtain, work-study programs to participate in, and other financial support to achieve your goals.
I call out to the teachers, mentors, parents and guardians to urge this year’s graduates to take advantage of the opportunities they have available to them. Be that inspiring voice to get them into school. It’s the people they look up to who make a profound impact on their lives. They can truly shape a new generation of community leaders and professionals for the future.
Students, especially young students, need support. On Guam, it’s particularly easy to find that with our big families and network of friends. We’re always here for one another and willing to lend a helping hand.
As we look to the future of Guam, let’s remember that success and achievement are within everyone’s grasp. It might seem difficult, but the commitment and sacrifice you put in are bound to provide rewards. With the help of a healthy support system, and the drive to pursue a higher education, our dreams are possible.
