WE NOTICE the Guam Police Department has laid on some extra roadblocks and sobriety checkpoints for this weekend.
That’s probably a good idea, since pumping $93 million in fresh cash into the economy all at once will undoubtedly generate some extra partying and celebration.
If the election were held this weekend, we’re pretty sure Eddie Calvo and Ray Tenorio would be re-elected. There are about 45,000 registered voters on Guam, and with more than 30,000 checks going out yesterday and today, most of them presumably to voters, there’s bound to be some good will and warm feelings of gratitude toward the officials who made Christmas in June happen.
Whether it will last until November of 2014 is mere speculation, of course, but there is a mid-term election this year, and it probably did not escape your notice that most of the incumbent senators who’ll be running this fall, Democrats and Republicans alike, jumped on this particular bandwagon with alacrity.
In fact, all of this is probably going to have more of an impact on this year’s election than you may believe. The goal of Gov. Calvo is to be able to work with a Republican majority in the 32nd Guam Legislature. Judging by the number of candidates for each party who’ve picked up petition packets, he may get his wish.
According to information provided by the Guam Election Commission, there are petitions for 25 Republican hopefuls circulating, but only 15 for Democrats. If those numbers hold, the Democrats won’t need a primary. A lot of them will be incumbents, so the figures are a little misleading. But it’s clear the Calvo-Tenorio administration is working hard to make this a Republican year.
Pretty much forgotten in this tax refund euphoria is the fact that every dollar being doled out this weekend was borrowed, and we, or our kids and grandkids, must pay it back. That’s one thing you can take to the bank, right along with your refund. The people who loaned our government this money, at very favorable rates, did so because they have no doubt they will be paid back, including that interest.
They’re secure in their confidence in the full faith and credit of the government of Guam because they were assured, and they know, that the government can always increase taxes to make the loan payments. It’s the full faith and credit of all of us, the people of Guam, which imbued them so confidently with the belief they will be paid back.
So enjoy your weekend, and your refund. And drive carefully and sober.

If the voters dump the Fab Five ( as we should ) then there will be lots of openings for new faces on the Republican side. Pray for a change in November..
