SOMETIMES a few pictures are worth more than many words. Located elsewhere in today's edition of the Variety, we reported a case of animal cruelty heard in Superior Court yesterday. Through Guam Animals In Need and the Guam Territorial Veterinarian, we have pictures of the dog whose treatment triggered the citation.

The owner was issued an animal cruelty citation because he maltreated and neglected the dog; he was found guilty Tuesday by Superior Court Presiding Judge Alberto Lamorena. The fate of the dog, which was not confiscated, is not known – although from the pictures it appears the animal was near death.

Only a few animal cruelty citations are issued on Guam each year. The Variety is going to determine how the others were adjudicated, and why there are so few. Unfortunately, too many owners treat their animals like this unfortunate dog.

A Prayer for Animals

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death.

We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

Albert Schweitzer

( I never herd of this ' Albert ' guy, doubt he will ever be famous or anything ! )

A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun.
Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.

He's been here for days now with nothing to do
But sit by the road, waiting for you.

He can't understand why you left him that day.
He thought you and he were stopping to play.

He's sure you'll come back, and that's why he stays.
How long will he suffer? How many more days?

His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry.
He's sick now from hunger and falls, with a sigh.

He lays down his head and closes his eyes,
I wish you could see how a waiting dogs dies

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

I remember one kid, a much larger one than me, grab me by the neck back in the day because I said something like "it is only a dog" referring to a stray dog in a certain context, (I did not abuse nor harm it.) He was a Hindu kid because Hindus believe in reincarnation, in that the person could be reincarnated as a dog or anything else, and that was a lot worse experience than what Dave Davis wrote in the Variety asking for my head after I said that "it might be time to eat dogs" because the amount of energy it takes to make dog pet food is disproportionat ely not worth it in the climate change context.
It is a similar experience that some folks have with President Obama. No matter what he does: more war or more tax cuts, because he is a Democrat or because he is half-black, whatever he does is not good enough for them. These folks are in the shrinking minority and they lash out, out of paranoia and fear.
There is hope: Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, is in favor of linking the minimum wage (an anathema to some folks, even here on Guam) to inflation. Hooray. Next thing on the agenda in 2013: End wars, raise taxes and act like a liberal Democrat, Mitt.
(It is not "Shark's Finn," John Smith. I know he replied once before to you as "Trebark." I am kind. I will do no such thing.)

Animal cruelty is unfortunate, but I would say that untied dogs is a more pressing issue. Loose dogs directly affect the public. No human being should be put at risk of catching a disease or being maimed because inconsiderate pet owners are too lazy or stubborn to tie their animals. In the past three months I've been bitten twice by loose pets. Boonie dogs are actually less of a nuisance because they keep their distance from people. Hooray for convicting a pet abuser but I'd rather see loose pet owners get it.
