GUAM Fire Department Chief Joey San Nicolas for several years has always been at the forefront of assisting residents in emergency situations. But over the next few months, he is leaving to serve the nation.

San Nicolas is among about 600 Guam Army National Guard soldiers getting ready for a year-long deployment in Afghanistan.

“The total mobilization is one year. The latest date is Feb. 27 when we get our papers for mobilization,” said San Nicolas, who is a first lieutenant in the Army Guard. “In the coming months in October and November, there will be rapid training for mobilization.”

The fire chief said he’s happy to answer the call to serve both Guam and the U.S., but not without having an action plan for the acting fire chief who will take over while he is away. However, there’s still no word as to who will be appointed for the temporary position.

“I’m laying out a plan for over the year to ensure the acting fire chief who will replace me will have enough information and resources to ensure all of our efforts for the Guam Fire Department continue while I’m away,” San Nicolas said.
