NEARLY 80 percent of Continental Micronesia flight attendants approved a contract extension with United Continental Holdings Inc., covering the carrier's over-275 flight attendants based in Guam, a news release from the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) stated.

The agreement contained job security improvements as well as flexibility and economic growth, the release indicated.

“This contract extension allows us to move forward with single contract negotiations while securing improvements that are important to flight attendants,” stated Suzanne Hendricks, AFA president at Continental Micronesia. “We look forward to advancing joint contract negotiations with United so that flight attendants from our three carriers are unified under the protections of a single agreement.”

According to a United Airlines release, the new labor agreement extends the previous current collective bargaining agreement through December 2014.

"We now have ratified agreements with all three of our flight attendant groups represented by the AFA, and this is a positive step forward in bringing together our work groups," stated Sam Risoli, senior vice president of Inflight. "We will now turn our attention to working with the AFA on a single contract that is competitive for United and provides additional benefits for our flight attendants."

United and AFA negotiators from Continental Micronesia are scheduled to begin negotiations for a joint collective bargaining agreement on Aug. 27.
