THE Guam Environmental Education Committee, or EEC, was recently acknowledged by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Pacific Southwest Region for their work in “Educational Leadership,” and for their significant contributions to the work of environmental protection.
The Guam EEC will join 11 other winners of the 2012 annual environmental awards from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and tribal lands.
The awardees were selected from nominees received this year from businesses, government officials, tribes, media, environmental organizations and community activists, according to a news release.
Aside from educational leadership, the other award categories include clean technology, tribal environmental protection, green business of the year, green government, zero waste advocate, sustainable agriculture champion, climate change champion, green chemistry, environmental justice champion, efficient water infrastructure, and children’s environmental health.
“The winners, green heroes all, prove there are many ways to protect our air, water and land,” stated Jared Blumenfeld, the USEPA’s regional administrator for the Pacific Southwest, in the press release. “Each one has taken up the challenge to improve our environment, and we all stand to benefit,” he added.
In addition to Guam EPA, other members of the Guam EEC include the University of Guam, Department of Agriculture, Department of Education, and Guam Waterworks Authority, among other local agencies.
“The education committee is the group that brought events like Earth Day 2012, environmental summer camps, and other events. It is great to see a diverse group of people working together can be recognized for their efforts,” stated Tammy Jo Anderson-Taft, spokesperson of the Guam EPA.
Over the next few months, there will be individual presentations and award ceremonies at various locations in the Pacific Southwest region.
“They’ll probably bring the award to Guam when representatives from the USEPA visit later this year,” Anderson-Taft said.
