AS FLOODING continues in the Philippines in the worst weather since Typhoon Ketsana in 2009, local groups here on Guam are reaching out to help.
One of those groups is led by Sen. Tina Muña-Barnes whose office is collecting donations to assist the people affected by the recent flooding.
The senator is asking that donations, including towels, non-perishable food items, bed sheets and blankets, as well as monetary donations, be contributed for the victims of the flooding.
Muña-Barnes will work with community leaders and the Philippine Consulate in Guam to send the donations as they are received.
“With the recent news from abroad, there is a critical need for humanitarian assistance,” the senator said. “Our brothers and sisters in the Philippines need our help. I urge our community to find it in their hearts to help our efforts.”
According to international news reports, 1.95 million people have been affected by the flooding and are in dire need of medicine, blankets, mats, and dry clothing.
As of yesterday, it is reported that 293,000 are seeking refuge in makeshift evacuation centers. Countless others are fending for themselves or seeking the assistance of family members.
Manila authorities report 20 deaths this week while 73 deaths in total across the Philippines have been reported over the past two weeks of monsoon weather, a typhoon, and a tropical storm.
