FINEGAYAN Elementary School in Dededo has been chosen to participate in the Whole Child Network Summer Institute organized by the ASCD in Alexandra, Va. last July 15 to 17.
As part of their participation in the institute, the local elementary school “formulated strategies and learned tactics for implementing the whole child approach to education with other selected schools all over the country.”
The ASCD consists of a network of 58 affiliate organizations and 150,000 individual members from 145 counties. The nonprofit organization is “the global leader in developing and delivering innovative programs, products and services that empower educators to support the success of each learner.”
FES and the nine other elementary, middle and high schools have committed “to a comprehensive school improvement using the tenets of the Whole Child Initiative and their indicators as a sustainable whole child approach to educating participating schools’ students.”
FES, along with the other selected schools, will institutionalize membership to the organization as well as customized support in delivering the Whole Child approach to education at their respective schools.
Each participating school will also receive a $10,000 grant for the 2012-2013 school year and an opportunity, for up to five members from each school, to attend the organization’s 2013 Annual Conference and Exhibit Show in Chicago, Ill.
Afterwards, ASCD will be conducting one-day, on-site professional development events to introduce the Whole Child approach to education to each school community.
“We know that it takes collaboration, coordination and integration to implement a Whole Child approach to education in a school,” said Molly McCloskey, managing director of Whole Child Programs at ASCD. “Our work with each of these 10 schools supports key leaders and team members as they create and implement long-range plans that ensure each child in each classroom at their school is healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged.”
