NEARLY $12 million in funding will be in the hands of the Guam International Airport Authority to ensure energy-efficient upgrades that would save the airport about $1.9 million in annual energy costs.
Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo’s office yesterday announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development has approved an $11.9 million community facility loan for GIAA, which will be used to finance energy-efficient upgrades identified in an energy audit conducted by Johnson Controls.
The USDA selected First Hawaiian Bank as the primary loan lender.
Through the Community Facility Guaranteed Loan Program, USDA’s Rural Development guarantees up to 90 percent of loss of principal and interest on loans made and serviced for construction or improvements of community facilities that provide essential public services in rural areas, a news release from Bordallo’s office stated.
“More energy-efficient systems at Guam International Airport are important to maintaining our position as one of the top U.S. destinations for foreign visitors,” Bordallo stated. “Energy efficiency will help provide savings that is critical for the longterm operation of the airport. Moreover, it is important that the federal government continue its investment in the island. I will continue to support these efforts and look forward to seeing these funds benefit our community.”
GIAA in May announced it was implementing its Energy Performance Management Contract which includes an overhaul and upgrade of the airport’s air-conditioning system. The AC upgrade project began in phases by replacing inefficient air handling units, which explained the warm temperatures at the airport.
