DELEGATE Madeleine Bordallo's office on Friday announced the names of two students selected to participate in the 2012 Congressional Internship Program.
James E. Pangelinan from the Guam Community College and Vincent A.P. Reyes from the University of Guam will have the opportunity to experience working in Bordallo's offices in both Guam and Washington D.C.
While this is the first year GCC has participated in the program, this will be the fourth year for UOG.
According to a press release from Bordallo's office, Pangelinan was recommended by GCC President Dr. Mary Okada, based on a faculty committee review. He is currently studying early childhood education. Reyes, meanwhile, was recommended by UOG President Dr. Robert Underwood.
“The GCC and UOG Congressional Internship Programs were started by Bordallo as an opportunity for Guam’s college students to gain a better understanding of Congress and federal issues important to the local community,” the press release from Bordallo’s office stated.
“The selection process is a competitive application based on a candidate's intern project proposal and a faculty committee interview. James will develop a project on literacy rates among secondary school students, and Vincent will research issues related to the federal Medicare program.”
While undertaking their internships, both Pangelinan and Reyes will work first in Bordallo’s Guam District Office where they will assist with constituent service and provide administrative support. They will then travel by mid-July to Washington D.C. to work on Capitol Hill, conduct legislative research, and learn more about Guam's issues.
“James and Vincent are exceptional students who have demonstrated an interest in federal policy and programs,” Bordallo said in her statement.
“I commend them for their academic achievements, and I look forward to their participation in our internship program. This internship program is a great opportunity for Guam's future leaders to learn more about Congress and federal issues facing our island. Past interns continue to be involved in public service, and I encourage our young adults to take an interest in public policy and community service."
