NATIONAL park rangers yesterday discovered a vandalized World War II Liberators Monument at the War in the Pacific National Park in Asan.
Park Ranger Benjamin Hayes said the incident was discovered during the early morning while employees were raising the flags and getting ready for the Reef Ranger Conservation Corps Summer Camp.
“We were certainly saddened and surprised but unfortunately it’s starting to become more of a frequent occurrence at our parks,” Hayes said, referring to recent vandalism at other national parks on the island.
Just last week, the bathroom facilities at Ga’an Point were broken into. Stolen were flushers from the toilets as well as a door. In March, the ladies restroom was broken into and flushers were also stolen at Asan Beach Park.
“The monument is a granite pentagon and each side is a memorial to the different units that fought during the battle for Guam in 1944. It was the third Marine Division side that was broken away,” Hayes said.
He said someone could have used a hammer to break off part of the monument.
Hayes said they are now working with the Guam Police Department to catch the perpetrators.
“We’re definitely concerned about this and we’re looking at ways at not only catching the people who did this, but also to prevent future incidents,” he said.
Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call GPD at 472-8911 or Guam Crime Stoppers at 477-HELP (4357).
