THE Guam Federation of Teachers elected Tim Fedenko as its new president last Saturday after besting two candidates for the position.
He will replace Matt Rector, who will be leaving Guam at the end of June.
Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor assisted with the GFT re-election procedures.
Fedenko, who served as vice president during Rector’s term, won by 61 votes over Agana Heights Elementary teacher Carol Taitano Sommerfleck. Ed Quintanilla from Alutig Busing also vied for the presidency of Guam’s only teachers’ union.
Setting up a leadership meeting to bring back all members of GFT is foremost in Fedenko’s list of priorities.
“We do have to get back together and continue forward as one voice,” Fedenko stated.
Once he starts his term, Fedenko said he will continue to pursue teacher contract negotiations, among other priorities.
Fedenko, a teacher at Price Elementary School, said he feels humbly honored to have been chosen to lead GFT.
