Fireworks for July 4 and Liberation Day

THERE will be fireworks this year for the 4th of July and Liberation Day on July 21.

According to Robert Hofmann, chairman of the Liberation Committee’s Entertainment Subcommittee, the fireworks package ordered by the Mayors’ Council is already on the way and should be arriving in a few days.

Hofmann said the council is now seeking approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for a site where preparatory work can be done on the fireworks.

“The only things that are still pending are the clearances from the federal agencies. Most likely, the site of the fireworks will be in Tiyan but we don’t want to release where, for security purposes,” Hofmann said. “Where we’re shooting from is not on airport property.”

Hofmann further explained that the type of fireworks they are going to use is called consumer fireworks, which is different from fireworks used in the past, which are considered commercial-grade.

He said the commercial fireworks shoot higher in the air. But because of the location of the carnival, the council opted to use consumer fireworks, which go up to between 100 and 300 feet.

In addition, the cost of the consumer fireworks is $35,000, which is significantly lower than the commercial grades that cost between $100,000 to $150,000.

Both the July 4th and July 21st fireworks displays start at 9 p.m.

“The July 4th show will be shorter than Liberation. The main focus will be on the Liberation,” Hofmann said.

Bringing in the fireworks is local company ShowPros pyrotechnics, which is run by Jeff Sanchez, of Sinajaña. Handling the fireworks is Nick Perez, also of Sinajaña.

Meanwhile, the Liberation Carnival officially opens tonight and Hofmann said they already have a lineup of entertainment for June.
