MORE scams in the community are surfacing, this time involving individuals posing as Guam Department of Labor employees falsely threatening contractors with large labor fines.
GDOL issued a statement yesterday after receiving reports from some contractors who say they received phone calls from individuals claiming to be GDOL employees.
The extortion case involves scammers advising the contractor that he or she is in violation of labor laws and will be issued a large fine.
Later in the conversation, the contractor is offered a deal to have the violations removed if the contractor makes an immediate payment to the individual directly for a smaller amount in cash.
According to GDOL, numerous contractors have already come forward with similar stories of extortion.
The labor department director, in cooperation with the Guam Police Department, is actively investigating the reports and is warning all contractors and businesses to beware of the scam.
The two departments are advising all companies affected by these impostors or anyone who may have been tricked into paying money as part of a scam, to contact DOL investigators at 475-7003 or GPD’s Criminal Investigation Division.
Legitimate fines from GDOL are always issued in writing and employers have the right to appeal such fines. All payment for fines will always be made in the form of a cashier’s check payable to the Treasurer of Guam. Legitimate labor officials will never ask for cash payments to them directly.
