JFK teachers express concerns

WITH a stakeholder meeting occurring in a few days, several educators from John F. Kennedy High School again expressed their concerns yesterday about the decision made by the Guam Education Board to approve a new school schedule.

Social Studies teacher Ray Guerrero said the teachers will be assembling on May 15 to share their concerns about several decisions made by the Guam Education Board and several comments made in the media regarding the schedule changes.

He said one of the comments that caught their attention was that GW was the only school with concerns regarding the schedule changes.

English teacher Steve Protasio is concerned how the schedule change has been presented as a “trivial issue.” In fact, he said, the schedule changes can produce “a ripple effect on everything, from the school’s athletic programs to extra-curricular activities.”

Parents are also affected by these changes, according to Protasio.

“I’ve had parents who have indicated that they are going to have to put out more money now because they have to pay for their kids to stay in childcare much longer, because their teenager cannot come home earlier,” he emphasized.

The main concern expressed by the two teachers is the lack of true stakeholder consultation during the process of developing the policy – a concern they share with the GW stakeholders who attended a meeting with the board two weeks ago.

Protasio said the board has somehow come into a decision without any input from those who will be initially affected by these changes and those who can provide the best solution to the issue they are trying to address.

After a petition was circulated by JFK stakeholders, the Guam Education Board agreed to convene a meeting at 6 p.m., Monday, May 14 at the JFK cafeteria. A peaceful assembly will be held the following day, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Skinner Plaza.

This sounds like a real party. Let's all show up and declare a longer school day without substantive instructional changes in the emotional culture of the school, and the preservation of instructional minutes to raise the rigor, is meaningless. Of course you have to be as smart as a 5th grader to understand, that more of the same doesn't change the flavor. Hmmmm....

Mr. Mead is a hack for the Governor just as Mr. Gibson is one. I don't blame Mr. Mead for being one and I don't even blame Mr. Gibson, just the folks who hired him, namely one, Rex Sorensen, who hand-picked him to replace Jon Anderson, current Chief Editor for the Variety.

And then we have the "saps" from the Democratic Party, whether they are the Sunshine variety or otherwise, who long to get into the good graces of the media personalities thinking that somehow if they, these supposed Democrats, can only get the media folk to change their mind or to buy whatever they are selling, they can sleep better at night, so to speak. I do not know if these Democrats are aware that Ray Gibson is just playing them for fools or playing one off the other for the benefit of the local Republican Party, the only thing he lives for.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Mead told Mr. Gibson on k57 that he would not consider changing his vote which unfortunately echos Mr. Santos stance when asked the same question at the short GWHS meeting with the stake holders available at 8 am in the morning. The reason Mr. Mead gave to Mr. Gibson as to why the board wasn't going to resume negotiations on the contract was to wait for the new superintendent to some on board. Hmm...does this mean Mr. Mead believes that the 4 by 4 should be put on hold as well? This is a major issue!
