HUNDREDS of Filipino families affected by the recent devastating Typhoon Sendong in southern Philippines will soon be getting relief from their brothers and sisters on Guam.
The Filipino Community of Guam announced yesterday that it completed its Typhoon Sendong Fund Drive and has successfully raised $60,000 for the FCG relief fund.
In fact, according to the nonprofit organization, the funds have already been personally delivered by FCG President Leah Beth Naholowaa to their beneficiaries.
With the assistance of Mindanao Development Authority Chairperson Lou Antonio, Naholowaa traveled to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City in Northern Mindanao on April 30 – the two villages most ravaged by the December 2011 typhoon.
Naholowaa met with Father Roberto C. Yap, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan president, and Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz to hand over the donations.
According to the FCG, $29,000 will go toward the construction of homes in Cagayan de Oro. Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan donated about 5 hectares of university land as a resettlement area for the typhoon survivors.
In Iligan City, $9,000 was donated to Gawad Kalinga – a foundation assisting the township in rebuilding their city by constructing homes for survivors of the typhoon.
On Guam, FCG donated $20,000 to the Ayuda Foundation to assist in shipping donated medical supplies and equipment from California to the Maria Reyna Xavier Hospital in Cagayan de Oro.
