THE Public Utilities Commission last night approved a petition by the Guam Power Authority to increase monthly power bills by 3.39 percent.
This translates to about a $9 increase in power bills for the typical GPA consumer who uses about 1,000 kilowatts of electricity a month.
“For example, someone who is now paying $271.34 will be paying $280.53 with the new adjustment,” GPA spokesman Art Perez said. He added that the proceeds for the rate hike, which is effective May 1, will be used to pay for $138 million worth of bonds that were floated by GPA in 2010.
Funds provided by the bonds were used to finance GPA’s underground transmission line projects for the back area of Tumon, the Port Authority of Guam, some hybrid projects in Agat, generation upgrades, and the upgrading of some substations.
