AN INVESTIGATION into a car theft that occurred last month led to the arrest of a 39-year-old suspect this week, who previously had sold the stolen car so he could buy drugs.
Antonio Ayuyu is accused of stealing a light blue 1995 Nissan Sentra on April 5 then selling it to another individual for only $500.
According to Superior Court of Guam documents, the car owner on April 5 had parked the vehicle off the shoulder of the roadway in front of his home but later returned to find it missing.
Police were unable to locate any witnesses among the neighbors as to who may have stolen the vehicle.
It wasn’t until Tuesday, May 1 when police located the vehicle in Dededo. The car was being operated by a man identified as Patrick Dogyeg. During a police interview, Dogyeg revealed that he purchased the Nissan Sentra from Ayuyu whom he had only known for a month.
According to Dogyeg, Ayuyu sold the vehicle to him for $500 and claimed the Nissan Sentra belonged to his aunt, so he needed to pay her. Ayuyu told Dogyeg he would give the keys and registration but had not yet done so.
Police located Ayuyu shortly thereafter and arrested him. During the police interview, Ayuyu apparently gave different versions of how and why he sold the vehicle to Dogyeg.
Ayuyu admitted that the Nissan Sentra did not belong to him or his aunt, but denied stealing the vehicle.
“[Ayuyu] stated that he first became aware of the vehicle when he saw a Micronesian male park the vehicle a week before and walk away from the vehicle,” court document stated. “[Ayuyu] at first said he did not know Patrick and then admitted that he did know Patrick.”
Ayuyu then claimed Dogyeg gave him money but did not know why. He added that he used the money that Dogyeg gave him to buy methamphetamine.
Ayuyu faces charges of theft of property and theft of receiving, both as second degree felonies. He was charged yesterday in Superior Court. He is currently being held on $5,000 cash bail, court spokesperson Joshua Tenorio confirmed.
