THE Judiciary of Guam yesterday revealed that Judge Pro Tempore Richard H. Benson will be the recipient of the 5th Hustisia Award.

The Hustisia Award will be presented to Benson at 4 p.m. today in the Justice Monessa G. Lujan Courtroom of the Supreme Court of Guam.

According to the Judiciary, Benson has made significant contributions to the island’s justice system by serving Guam and the Pacific island community for more than 44 years.

“Despite his retirement in 2001, Judge Benson’s dedication to the justice system continues. He has mediated more than 50 cases with Inafa’ Maolek since 2006. During its existence, Benson has also mediated and arbitrated cases for the Guam International Arbitration Center,” the Judiciary explained. “Benson’s dedication to Guam and the Pacific is seen in his willingness to serve pro tempore, or temporarily, when disqualification prevents judges or justices from sitting on a case. To date, he is often appointed pro tempore by Guam’s Superior and Supreme Courts, the FSM Supreme Court, and the courts of the Northern Marianas.”

The Hustisia Award honors a person or organization that has contributed significantly to the improvement of the administration of justice and good government in Guam. It is presented at the end of Guam’s Law Week celebration.

“We are delighted and honored to recognize the important role that Judge Pro Tempore Benson has played in our island’s legal and judicial history,” Chief Justice F. Philip Carbullido stated. “His service to the courts of Guam, the Northern Marianas and the FSM reveal his involvement in the development of judicial systems here in the Pacific and his dedication to the islands.”

Last year, the Judiciary presented the 4th Hustisia Award to Sister Brigid Perez of the Religious Sisters of Mercy. Perez is the program director of Alee Shelter, a home for victims of family violence and child abuse.
