A $400,000 supplemental grant from the University of Guam will enable a local nonprofit organization to sustain their direct cancer support programs for the rest of the fiscal year.

Guam Cancer Care provides patient advocacy as well as financial assistance to individuals who cannot afford the cost of cancer treatment. During the past six months, the organization’s Patient Care Program was able to assist 122 individuals with cancer on Guam, according to executive director Terry Cuabo.

Cuabo states: “We are extremely grateful to the University of Guam for awarding this supplemental budget to our organization as it will allow us to sustain some of our key programs throughout the remainder of the fiscal year.  We look forward to working collaboratively with the university in continuing to provide these critical support services to many Guam cancer patients.”

The supplemental grant has enabled Guam Cancer Care to provide 41 patients with the much needed financial assistance to cover treatment expenses. Funding support received by the patients amounted to approximately $125,035.69.

Funding received by the organization comes from the Guam Cancer Trust Fund. Established via Public Law 30-80, the trust fund receives 15 percent of tobacco taxes generated by Guam.
