SPEAKER Judi Won Pat’s weekly address highlighted the issues affecting the construction of John F. Kennedy High School facilities.
Won Pat personally toured JFK with her staff, accompanied by school administrators, to look at the facilities after Capital Projects Finance Authority, or CAPFA, took over the construction side of the project from International Bridge Corporation.
After touring the premises, Won Pat said: “I am cautiously optimistic that progress is ongoing.” She added, “Having said this, I was very concerned with the progress that the administrators brought to me.”
CAPFA, which took over from IBC after project delays, has committed to complete the project by April 30. However, Won Pat noted that 15 projects are still pending completion despite the deadline set for CAPFA.
The installation of ADA-compliant signs and construction of the baseball field and walkways are just some of the projects that require completion.
In her weekly address, Won Pat also said there is a “possibility of litigation” if CAPFA reneges on its promise to address these concerns.
On a lighter note, Won Pat also mentioned that she will take up the issue of selling incandescent light bulbs to her colleagues in the Legislature after meeting two young women who spoke to her about this concern.
“Our students are smart thinkers; they are taking an active role in the community, but more importantly, they care – they really care. I am confident that as they grow into mature adults, they will take up the mantle of leadership of this island and her people,” Won Pat stated.
