ILLEGAL contraband continues to make its way into the Mangilao Department of Corrections compound, and DOC has stepped up its investigation.
An inmate informed Internal Affairs investigators that he was given chewing tobacco by a DOC officer. But it’s been determined by a Superior Court judge that this particular inmate has a mental illness.
Meanwhile, DOC spokesman Lt. Antone Aguon said they are also investigating who was trying to receive a bag of illegal contraband that was found stuck on the barbed wire fence by an officer roving the perimeter of the facility. The bag was found late in January.
“It got stuck in between the buffer zone,” he said.
The bag contained 15 cans of Copenhagen tobacco chew, a $50 bill, two cell phones, two sim cards, and a small packet of a substance that was determined to be methamphetamine.
“If they can’t get it another way, they have people drive by and attempt to throw it in. They can’t stop, but then again it only takes a second to stop your vehicle and throw things,” he said.
It’s also not the first time this type of incident has happened.
“I’d say we have something like this every six months, wherein people throw something in and it doesn’t make it,” he said, adding he isn’t aware of any items that did make it over the fence.
“We’re looking into these cases but we don’t have any suspects right now. Our only response is to beef up security,” he added.
