THE investigation into the apparent suicide of Department of Corrections detainee Bernard Alan Jennings, 42, is ongoing.
Jennings, a former Navy sailor, was found hanging in his cell by a Department of Corrections officer during a routine check of the Mangilao compound. Jennings was in a jail cell at Post 5 and reportedly used a sheet.
DOC spokesman Lt. Antone Aguon said the Internal Affairs investigation should be completed in about a week or two. The findings will be sent to DOC Director Joe San Agustin for review.
“As far as we know, he wasn’t even on the radar for anything. He had only been in jail for almost two years,” Aguon said.
Jennings was confined on a $250,000 bond in September 2010 for allegedly cutting the throat of his then-girlfriend Latasha Tate.
He pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder with a special allegation of possession and use of a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, family violence, and resisting arrest.
