PARENTS, beware – law enforcement officers will issue a citation for not buckling up or if a child is not in a car seat.
Recently, the Guam International Airport Authority airport police, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works' Office of Highway Safety, conducted a check of all vehicles entering the temporary Untalan Middle School campus at Tiyan to make sure children were buckled up.
Cil Javier, of the Office of Highway Safety, said there were 25 parents and guardians cited for not complying with the seatbelt law.
Javier said the seatbelt check is done at random at all schools and is conducted usually in the morning.
“We want to make sure the children are safe, most especially the children that the parents are dropping off at schools. We also do our educational outreach and give them handouts on the public law. We let them know they have to wear their proper seat belts, as well as all the passengers in the vehicle,” she said.
The fine is $100 per person including the driver. But Javier said she’s received a report that GPD has issued a $1,000 citation for just one vehicle.
