THE people of Guam must recycle aluminum. Guam imports more than 79 million aluminum beverage cans a year, which is more than 2.2 million pounds.
Only a small number of cans are recycled. Most of them end up in the trash or on the side of the road. Once an aluminum can is recycled it can be part of a new can within six weeks.
If we recycle 2 million pounds of cans through the i*recycle programs, the schools of our island would earn well over $1 million. There are about 40 i*recycle bins located at our public and private schools islandwide. Recycling aluminum cans will help Guam’s environment and earn money for our schools.
There are three ways that we will benefit from recycling aluminum cans: environmentally, economically, and as a community. Environmentally because recycling saves precious natural resources and energy. Economically because aluminum cans are the most valuable containers to recycle, saving both time and money. Community because it will benefit our schools financially.
People of Guam, please take recycling more seriously and understand the importance of it.
