Chuukese need good role models

EVERY once in a while, I meet up with people who are not indigenous to Guam. When I do, I have some things that I want to get off my back. Last night I had the opportunity to meet a few people who came to Guam from Chuuk, and I really came out and let them have it. One of the problems, as I see it, is when the Compact of Free Association happened a few decades back, it was put together by people who may not have had Guam’s best interest in mind. We have more than 24,000 people living on Guam now from Chuuk, and they are still acting like outsiders.

I told them they are residents of Guam now, and even if they have not fully assimilated as Guamanians, they should act a lot different than they do now. They are existing on Guam, but act as though they have to pay attention to the FSM consul-general and heed the advice that has been given by them.

I feel that though they are not Chamorro, they are a very important part of the community. This is their home. I met with a few of them outside of an establishment and told them what the Chuukese need most on Guam is good behavior to emulate. I don't expect this to happen overnight, but I do think the people of the island need as much as possible to have the Chuukese community step up and come to terms with their existence here.
