Red herring

A FEW hundred years ago in merry old England, so we are told, there was an interesting method of training hunting and tracking dogs. Across the fresh trail of say, a fox, trainers would drag a particularly strong smelling fish such as a red herring. The smart dogs would quickly recognize this as a distraction and learn to keep on the trail of the fox.
