Forgiveness does not appear, automatically. Each person must believe individually that Jesus Christ was sent to Earth to die for that person's sins. To believe that your sins are forgiven automatically without that personal belief statement means that you have not yet believed personally in the death and resurrection of the Son of God. Hence the famous verse: "For God so loved the world that whosoever believes in Him, may not perish, but shall have everlasting life." Notice the word, may. This is the fundamental difference between Catholic Christians and non-Catholic Christians. This difference also leads some Catholic Christians to believe that they can still pray for the souls of their dearly departed loved ones, unlike most non-Catholic Christians who do not believe so. Once you are dead, you are in another realm and no one here on Earth can do anything for you. This is but the first death where folks who have not yet accepted or received Jesus Christ as their PERSONAL savior goes to Hades or Hell and those who have received Jesus Christ does not. The second death occurs during Judgment Day when God decides who makes it to heaven through their good works and who gets tossed into the Lake of Fire for eternity. It is written, though, that even those from Sodom and Gomorrah would be shown more mercy on that day. Why? Because those folks who got incinerated during that fire and brimstone episode did not get a chance to hear the true gospel.

Of course, the pre-Christians Chamorros were not living "in blissful ignorance of God", they, like every other primitive society that we are aware of, had some notion of a deity. Obviously the author of the original article meant to say "in blissful ignorance of the Christian God", the fact that he fails to make the distinction is telling.
